Lent is more than a time to give something up, it’s also a time to take on something new. If you are not familiar with the history of lent, read on…
The Greek word, Tessarakoste, means 40th. It represents the 40 days and 40 nights Jesus spent in the desert, before His crucifixion. He spent this time alone with no food or drink-obviously, Jesus was superhuman and we are not, so we cannot go more than a few days without water.
Jesus often went off to pray by Himself. He spent this time preparing Himself for what was to come. During this time in the desert, the devil tried to tempt Jesus many times. The devil even tried to twist the scripture and get Jesus to do things He ought not to do. Of course, Jesus did not give in to the temptations. Can you imagine how tough that must have been? Could you have fought off the temptations? Is there something in your life that may be getting in the way of your relationship with God?
Think about it carefully
Do you use words that may not be appropriate? Are you constantly complaining about something or someone? Are you always pointing out others’ faults? Maybe one of these applies to you? If it does, pray for change in your life. Always turn to God for help, He will speak to you in ways that you will understand. Pray about what to give up and or take on. Try reading the Bible every morning or every evening. Make it a part of your routine. Do you have a cup of coffee or tea in the morning? Read scripture while you have your morning brew! If you always complaining, try thinking of something good to say. These are just some ideas to get you started. You can use the ideas I have suggested or think of your own. The Holy Spirit will help guide you.
